The second caliph of Islam Saydna Umar bin Khattab رضیﷲ عنه used to do patrolling during the night in the city and once he was on patrolling and heard a woman uttering these lines
تَطَاوَلَ هَذَا اللَّيْلُ وَاسْوَدَّ جَانِبُهْ
وَطَالَ عَلَيَّ أَنْ لَا خَلِيلَ أُلَاعِبُهْ
This night is getting extended and it's getting dark from one side.
And long time has been passed on me since I had not a partner (Husband) to be with.
فَوَاللَّهِ لَوْلَا خَشْيَةُ اللَّهِ وَحْدَهْ
حُرِّكَ مِنْ هَذَا السَّرِيرِ جَوَانِبُهْ
So, Wallahi If I had not feared from Allah Azzawajal
So, I would have find myself someone to tremble on this bed
When Saydna Umar رضیﷲ عنه heard this, he commanded in the morning to find out who was that woman. So, people informed that she's the daughter of so and so and her Husband left for the Jihaad (War) and she's alone for a quite a long time and separate from her Husband.
Then Umar رضیﷲ عنه asked her daughter Hafsa رضیﷲ عنها
يَا بُنَيَّةُ، كَمْ تَصْبِرُ الْمَرْأَةُ عَنْ زَوْجِهَا
Oh! my daughter, How long does a woman can have sabr without her husband?
To this Sayyida Hafsa رضیﷲ عنها replied: يَا أَبَهْ، يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكَ أَمِثْلُكَ يَسْأَلُ مِثْلِي عَنْ هَذَا؟
Oh! My Father, May Allah Forgive you! You're asking me this kind of questions?
Then Umar رضیﷲ عنه said:
إِنَّهُ لَوْلَا أَنَّهُ شَيْءٌ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَنْظُرَ فِيهِ لِلرَّعِيَّةِ، مَا سَأَلْتُكِ عَنْ هَذَا
Indeed, if I had not intended to look at the condition of my people, I would not have asked you about it
To this Sayyida Hafsa رضیﷲ عنها replied:
أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ، أَوْ خَمْسَةَ أَشْهُرٍ، أَوْ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ
Four months, Five Months, Six Months.
Then Umar رضیﷲ عنه gave orders upon this
يَغْزُو النَّاسُ يَسِيرُونَ شَهْرًا ذَاهِبِينَ وَيَكُونُونَ فِي غَزْوِهِمْ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ، وَيَقْفُلُونَ شَهْرًا
People will travel to go to battle in a month and wage war for four months and will be halted for four months

On the basis of this Farooqi ruling or judgement fuqaha came to the term that it is not allowed for anyone to indulge into war more than 6 months and this is the ruling of majority of the scholars.
